Emmett Masters: storyteller, tinkerer, and occasional banana
Writing was part of Emmett Masters’ world long before it became his career. His mother was an English professor, and Emmett grew up around grading papers and manuscript writing. His mother and one of his older sisters both studied English before becoming teachers, and both are published poets with multiple books to their names.
A lifelong musician who played saxophone, drums, and other instruments, Emmett entered college planning to become a music teacher. But he soon realized teaching might not be the right fit, so he switched to English, a subject that had always felt familiar. Given the family history, you could say that plot twist had some foreshadowing…
Fine print, bigger stories
Emmett’s route into professional writing had a few more turns. A job at a hedge fund administrator introduced him to finance, where he wrote legal and compliance content and discovered he liked digging into specialized subject matter.
That led to B2B copywriting, where Emmett became the sole copywriter at a large company and tackled just about whatever landed on his desk. Later, at Microsoft, he wrote web content for Surface and Windows for Business. He liked the work, but page after page of web copy helped him realize he missed switching between formats. He also wanted something his previous roles hadn’t offered much of: other writers to learn from.
A good crew for the craft
Then Emmett spotted a job description with a title he’d never seen before: Storyteller. The title caught his attention, as did the prospect of joining a crew of people who cared about writing as much as he did. For someone who describes himself as naturally curious, that environment was a big draw. “I’m somebody who likes to learn,” Emmett says. “And it’s really hard to learn by yourself.” At 2A, that means Emmett gets to stretch beyond a single format while swapping ideas with fellow Storytellers who are always looking for ways to make the work better.
Keeping things interesting
That curiosity doesn’t disappear when Emmett closes his laptop. At home in Maine with his wife, two kids, two dogs, and two cats, he’s usually making something. He tackles woodworking projects, tinkers with cars, and maintains what he calls an “enormously embarrassing” Lego collection. He also runs and bikes, preferably with a little fun mixed in. This summer, that meant running a 10K with friends while dressed as a banana (there’s gotta be a “banana split” joke in here somewhere).
At 2A, Emmett brings that same spirit of experimentation to every project. His range as a writer and interest in trying new things help him find fresh ways to turn complex ideas into stories people want to read.
